Fire ignites over 120 acres in Smiths Grove, turns farmland to ash
SMITHS GROVE, Ky. – More than 100 acres of land are now ash after a fast-moving brush fire sparked in Smiths Grove Monday.
Several fire departments, including Smiths Grove Volunteer Fire Department, Richardsville Fire Department and Gott Volunteer Fire Department, were on the scene Monday to get the fire under control.
Officials say when they arrived, the flames were up to 12 feet tall.
The Smiths Grove Fire Department says the fire started when straw bale equipment malfunctioned and ignited.
In addition to the fire and police agencies that helped to secure the area, Smiths Grove Fire Department says several local farmers were heroes at the scene – because of them, they got the fire under control.
