Feral hog spotted in Edmonson County

BROWNSVILLE, Ky. – Residents of Edmonson County are being warned to be on the lookout for feral hogs in the area.

A feral hog has been spotted on at least two farms in the county.

Feral pigs are known for being extremely destructive to crops and other vegetation as well as spreading disease to livestock and other native animals.

“The way they root through the ground to find their food, the roots, the grubs, it really destroys the landscape,” said Molly Schroer, Mammoth Cave National Park Spokesperson.

These kinds of pigs are also often aggressive.

If spotted, Edmonson County Sheriff Shane Doyle says either shoot the animal or call the sheriff’s office.

“That is the only way to stop this problem from becoming a bigger problem,” said Doyle.

The sheriff’s office is unsure of how many feral hogs there may be but warn that these animals breed quickly and are considered a threat to the community.

Schroer says, although none have been spotted in the park, it is likely they have made their way into the forests of Mammoth Cave as well.
