FEMA mitigation at BG Home Depot & Lowe’s through Saturday
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Members of FEMA are set up in Home Depot and Lowe’s in Bowling Green to teach the recovering town about pre-disaster measures.
They teach mitigation techniques, or how to prevent so much destruction if another tornado comes through again.
FEMA Community Education and outreach specialist John Ortiz said, “That’s the thing that we’re most interested in – saving lives – when this kind of thing happens.”
FEMA task force lead of disaster survivor assistance Eddie Howard followed up saying, “The more you know, the safer you are.”
FEMA said properly rebuilding your home after tornado destruction is especially important.
“We have information about construction techniques where you can protect your doors, windows, all the siding and roof from wind damage,” FEMA Community Education and outreach specialist Andy Mathis said.“The hope is to get that devastation restructured, refinished, that’s going to take some time obviously, but we’re trying to be here to help.”
Also, they’re emphasizing the importance of mapping out a disaster plan with everyone in the house.
Ortiz said safe rooms have been the question at the the top of everyone’s mind. “I’m pretty sure that those who are severely affected by the tornado are the most interested.”
You can go to either the Bowling Green Lowes or Home Depot through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m. After Saturday, people in need of assistance can still turn to the disaster recovery center in the old Sears mall.
