Fallen Bowling Green police officer remembered 13 years after untimely passing

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- It was 13 years ago Thursday a Bowling Green police officer lost his life in the line of duty.

Officer David ‘Slim’ Whitson was killed by friendly fire after engaging in a struggle with a suspect armed with a knife.

The incident occurred on October 31, 2006 on Vine Street.

The suspect also died as a result of gunshot wounds.

On Thursday, the Bowling Green Police department remembered Whitson with several posts and photos on the law enforcement agency’s Facebook page.

Warren County Sheriff Brett Hightower, who at the time was Whitson’s supervisor at the Bowling Green Police Department, told WNKY he’s thankful ‘Slim’ was a part of his life.

“He was a fun-loving, very enjoyable guy to be around,” said Hightower. “He had a wonderful sense of humor and he was a lot of fun to joke with and talk with. He was a great police officer.”

Whitson served 8 years with the police department.

To date, he is the only Bowling Green police officer to lose his life in the line of duty.

He is survived by his wife and two children and was 33 years old when he passed away.
