Facebook CEO Zuckerburg faces Congress
(NBC News) Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg faced lawmakers on Capitol Hill Wednesday to explaining why his social media company is looking to expand into the cryptocurrency marketplace.
“Facebook is about putting power in people’s hands,” Zuckerburg told the House Financial Services Committee.
The company is working to launch its new digital currency, Libra.
Still, it is the power the internet giant wields that worries many on the committee.
Members blastied Zuckerberg over what they call Facebook’s problems, including security, accusations of discrimination, lack of oversight, the use of the platform by Russia in the 2016 election and the company’s decision not to fact check political ads during the current campaign season.
“We believe that people should be able to see for themselves what politicians are saying,” Zuckerburg said.
The scrutiny comes just days after facebook announced new safety measures to guard against outside influences on the coming election.
