Don’t ditch Dry January
SOUTH CENTRAL, KENTUCKY.- If you made the vow to complete Dry January, don’t quit the fast too fast. If continuing a Dry January is the last thing on your mind consider the benefits.
Experts recommend that you don’t ditch it so soon. There are many advantages to quitting alcohol from better sleep and shedding extra weight. The long-term benefits are extensive, and limiting or removing alcohol from your diet decreases the risk of head, neck, liver and breast cancer.
Rachel Miller, an Oncology Dietician at the University of Kentucky shares the importance of continuing this healthy habit. “To achieve the benefit of decreasing your alcohol consumption and moderating, we kind of continue, it doesn’t necessarily have to be dry January, but building the healthy habits that may be dry January encourages.”
Completely quitting cold turkey is not recommended, depending on how much you rely on alcohol. However, maintaining sobriety or just limiting the amount that you drink is a reasonable goal. The most important thing is that you find your why, and continue moving forward. Along with having your why there are several practical steps you can take. One way to maintain your sobriety is to replace alcohol with a new hobby or alternatives like mocktails.
