Disaster SNAP benefits for lost food during power outages
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- If you lost power as a result of Sunday’s storms, and receive snap benefits, there are ways to get the help you may need.
When an area is declared as a state of emergency, SNAP Benefits offer what is called, Disaster Snap Benefits, meaning, if you have purchased groceries with SNAP Benefits in the last month, you can apply for disaster benefits and receive food stamp replacements for any food lost during the power outage.
Ann Woolbright, manager of the 211 Call Center, says, “These are low-income families, these are families who have children, these are elderly, our seniors in the area who won’t get another social security check until the beginning of the month. They don’t have the extra funds to just go out and replace things that have been lost.”
If you or your family need services of any kind, related to snap benefits, food pantries, or even a place to shower, you are urged to call 211 at the United Way of Southern Kentucky for 24 hour assistance.
