(NBC News) — President-elect Joe Biden addressed the nation Monday, shortly after the Electoral College vote confirmed his victory over President Trump.
“In this battle for the soul of America, democracy prevailed,” Biden said.
President-elect Biden also pledged to maintain focus on defeating the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There’s urgent work in front of us. Getting this pandemic under control and getting a nation vaccinated against this virus,” he said.
His electoral college win came on the same day as the first vaccinations in the United States, as well as a darker milestone: the pandemic’s U.S. death toll topped 300,000.
Health officials think life may get back to normal by fall if they can convince most Americans to get the shot.
Nearly three million doses are expected at hundreds of locations this week.
