Curling at SOKY Ice Rink

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – For anyone who wants to find a new winter activity, Bowling Green has its own curling club that is open to anyone who wants to try it at the SOKY Ice Rink.

The league takes place on Monday nights and is mostly open for adults though children were present. The curling is a little different from that seen on tv. Teams use cast iron skillets and hit a pot lid that is placed a distance away from them. The overall goal is the same as normal curling, get your pans as close to the marker as possible and knock the other team’s pans away.

SOKY Ice Rink Board member Leah Spurlin says that many people tried it when it started a few years ago and have kept coming back.

“A lot of people have come out here and they didn’t know anything that we’re doing, and once they start pushing the skillets across ice. Everything changes. It’s a lot of fun. Their strategy that goes in it and there’s a lot a good fellowship with other adults.” Spurlin said.

For some it has presented them with an opportunity to do something with family when other sports have been difficult such as Jay Duncan and his family.

“I think the best memory is I have a daughter in a wheelchair, so she can participate also. So not limited to just people with physical abilities, but also to people with some disabilities. And so so she’s participating along with it, which makes it a tremendous amount of fun. So really open to anybody, regardless of your ability.” Duncan said.

The league will continue into January, for more information visit https://www.warrencountyky.gov/soky-ice-rink/.
