(KBJR/NBC News) — Dozens of ice anglers were rescued from Lake Superior Tuesday after the massive sheet of ice they were positioned on cracked and began drifting into open water.

Fisherman Jack Silgen says he and a friend attempted to get off of the ice when they heard yelling and saw others starting to run toward shore.

“We packed up as quick as we could and took off running and seeing if maybe we could maybe get off, but there was too large of a gap,” Silgen said.

Twenty-six were left stranded.

Emergency crews quickly responded, eventually bringing everyone to safety.

Duluth Fire Chief Shawn Krizaj says the lake’s ice conditions can change in an instant.

“Be cautious. Be careful. That’s my best recommendation. I hate to say, ‘Don’t ever go out on the ice,’ but the problem is you just don’t know, you can never know,” he said.
