Covington Woods Park receives new upgrades
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The City of Bowling Green is updating one of its oldest parks to make it more inclusive and safe.
Covington Woods Park was established in the 1940s, but its playground now has a state-of-the-art, crumb-rubber surface making it more accessible for children on crutches and in wheelchairs. It’s even safer for infants to crawl around on. The new covering provides a softer cushion for playing.
Brent Belcher, director of Bowling Green Parks and Recreation, says, “Mulch is traditional, and it’s ADA accessible, but this is inclusive and means that children of all abilities are running and playing. If they’re in a wheelchair, they’re still right there with everyone else. And if you look at this playground, it’s actually an inclusive playground that is great for young children to play on as well. So it’s a very universal place, a structure that we’re proud to have here.”
Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars was spent on this project, forty thousand of which was donated by the Teresa Wilson endowment fund.
Covington Woods Park is the fourth city park to get such a make-over, but the parks and recreation department isn’t done yet. The Lovers Lane Park is the next one on their list for inclusive upgrades.
Covington Woods will also be seeing more work, including a new golf pro shop.
