Community Action of Southern Kentucky offers Foster Grandparent Program

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- For over 20 years, Community Action of Southern Kentucky has provided several counties the opportunity to foster grandparents, enabling them to offer vital social and emotional support to children.

Krista Graves, the Foster Grandparent director, reflects on her experience, stating, “Coming from the public school system for 15 years, I had foster grandparents in my classroom, and those relationships were incredibly special.”

This initiative not only benefits children but also enriches the lives of the grandparents involved.

Ruth Bumpus, an adopted grandparent, shares her perspective, saying, “I feel like if I wasn’t doing this for this long, I wouldn’t get around as good as I do.”

The insight and warmth that these grandparents bring to the classroom create a nurturing environment that is especially beneficial for younger students. Aaliyah Davis, a Foundry Lead Teacher, notes, “When she’s out, they’re always asking, ‘Where’s grandma?’ They really enjoy having her in class.”

Bumpus emphasizes the importance of staying active and engaged, stating, “I just love kids. They keep me hopping.”

This intergenerational connection fosters a sense of community, proving that the bonds formed between grandparents and children can have a profound impact on both their lives.
