Collision in Laurel County leads to death of London police officer

LONDON, Ky. – The Kentucky State Police says a London Police Department officer has died following a vehicle accident.
KSP troopers responded around 12:49 a.m. Sunday to a two-vehicle collision located at the intersection of South Main Street and KY 229 Barbourville Road in London.
KSP says an investigation revealed Casey P. Byrd, 36, of Oneida, Tennessee was driving a 2022 Ram pickup truck north on KY 229 Barbourville Road when his vehicle entered the intersection of South Main Street. Police say Byrd’s truck then hit a 2019 Dodge Charger police cruiser traveling southbound on South Main Street driven by on-duty London Police Department officer Logan K. Medlock, 26, of Keavy.
KSP says the collision resulted in Medlock suffering from life-threatening injuries. Medlock was pronounced dead at the scene by the Laurel County Coroner’s Office.
Byrd was not injured as a result of the collision.
Police say alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor. Byrd was arrested and charged with murder of a police officer and operating a motor vehicle under the influence, first offense (aggravating circumstance).
Byrd currently remains in the Laurel County Detention Center under a $1,000,000 bond.
