Childhood Cancer Awareness, checking in on a local family
WARREN COUNTY, Ky.- He’s pre-school age now and doing well as we check in on the Baker family.
Coincidentally, we spoke to Micah and Samantha Baker on the day of their son’s diagnosis, and even though August has leukemia, life didn’t come to an end, just a slower roll. 4-year-old August “Auggie” Baker was and probably still is running around outside enjoying all the things little boys enjoy both in and outside as he nears the end of his chemotherapy in January. Though it’s been a rough road, things have settled down.
Micah Baker, Auggie father told us that he feels “a weight lifted off his shoulders” now that his wife has been able to return to work, Samantha saying the feeling is mutual. It’s been around a year now that everyone has been working back to a sense of normalcy following Auggie’s tumultuous record of hospital visits, but the family is grateful and moving forward.
Samantha said “in the beginning, it’s hard, really hard” when asked to reflect on her family’s journey the last 2 years of their lives, saying that she’s glad to have jumped back in to “adult life” now that her son is doing better. Samantha told News 40 that Auggie would be chemo-free in January, meaning she “won’t have to worry about every fever” and other health scares, which excites her as well as the thought of “telling Auggie his story, about how strong and resilient and brave he was” through his cancer journey.
Mom said childhood cancer awareness is so important as it is a devastating diagnosis for many families and said more attention should be shone on the unfortunate reality for thousands of families and children every day.
