Carneiro named CUSA Special Teams Player of the Week

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU kicker Lucas Carneiro has been named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Carneiro had an impressive outing in WKU’s 44-17 win over UTEP on Thursday at Houchens-Smith Stadium to help the Hilltoppers move to 4-2 overall, 3-0 at home and 2-0 in CUSA play this season.

The redshirt sophomore went 3-for-3 on field goals and 5-for-5 on PATs against the Miners. His field goals came from 25, 42 and 54 yards. The 54-yard make was the longest of his career and was tied for the second-longest made field goal in program history. The three made field goals were also a single-game career best for the kicker.

Carneiro is now 7-for-8 on field goals this season and 21-for-21 on PATs.

Carneiro becomes the fourth Hilltopper recognized as a CUSA Player of the Week this season and the second to receive the nod on special teams. Quarterback Caden Veltkamp was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 16, while defensive back Devonte’ Mathews and punter Cole Maynard received Defensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the week honors on Sept. 23.

WKU’s next game will be at Sam Houston (5-1 overall, 2-0 CUSA) on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Kickoff at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium in Huntsville, Texas, is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
