Bowling Green starts Downtown Ambassador Academy program

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Downtown Bowling Green is inviting Western Kentucky University students to participate in a new program offered by the City of Bowling Green.

The Downtown Ambassador Academy program has officially launched and is looking for students eager to get involved with and learn more about downtown Bowling Green.

This project has been in the works now for a few years as the Downtown Development Division was looking for better ways to connect those on the hill with businesses located in downtown Bowling Green. They took inspiration from other city academies that are offered and through conversations held with some students on the hill.

“The city does these other academies like the Academy for New Americans, the over 50 academy, the junior police academy. And for the past three years, we have been talking about how can we create something that is just for downtown that is different, but it’s some kind of downtown academy. And we had a handful of WKU students tell us that they would feel more connected to Bowling Green and be encouraged to get part time work or look for work here after graduation,” said downtown development coordinator Telia Butler.

There is not a specific student that they are looking for either. They are looking to add students from all majors and walks of life to get involved with downtown Bowling Green.

“We opened it to all majors. We want a diverse group. The students that approached us about doing this were all spirit masters, honors toppers and student senators from SGA. They’re students who are already actively involved in some way on campus, but they were looking for something else outside of campus to do, which is what made it so appealing to them. But all of those organizations are made up of students of all majors and all interest,” Butler said.
