Bowling Green Parks and Recreation events, sports and camps for summer

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- With winter behind us and spring and summer coming into full effect, Bowling Green Parks and Recreation has lots of events and camps coming up for the warmer months.

With warmer weather approaching, Russell Sims Aquatic Center will be opening back up in just a couple of months, as opening day is set for May 25.

Along with that, spring sports, such as lacrosse and baseball, have already begun and signups for parks and rec’s various summer camps are now available.

Sign ups for Camp Happy Days, Summer Fun Camp and Camp Good Times are now out and each camp aims to provide local kids a fun place to make memories all summer long.

“As kids, we all kind of remember those times that we went to a sports camp during the summer or a day camp or even an overnight camp. And those are core memories. And so we don’t take lightly the responsibility that we have to welcome these kids into our care each summer and make sure that they have a summer to remember,” said Cameron Levis, recreation manager with Bowling Green Parks and Rec.

Parks and rec strives to make all events and camps inclusive, which is what it does with Camp Happy Days, its adaptive summer camp for children with physical and intellectual disabilities.

It aims to give these children an opportunity to have a great time at summer camp and make core memories that last a lifetime.

The adaptive sports department at Parks and Rec ensures that kids in the community with disabilities will be included and have a fun summer.

“It’s always going to be a critical piece to our department’s mission. Again, just making sure that as a community we’re able to focus on a person’s abilities and other disabilities and provide those individuals with a beneficial summer experience just like anybody else,” Levis added.
