Bowling Green Generals claim victory at Special Olympics Region One Basketball Tournament
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green Generals won the Special Olympics Region One Basketball Tournament on Saturday.
Thirty eight teams from the region played hard for the opportunity to advance to the state tournament, but it will be the Generals going to Louisville for that competition in March.
Three hundred and seventy five athletes took to the hardwood at the F.O. Moxley Center and the Kummer Little Recreation Center on Friday and Saturday for the first time.
This Region One Tournament stretched over two days to accommodate the record participation, and the competition was tough.
“These guys work just as hard, if not harder than anybody else,” Holly Vincent with Special Olympics Kentucky says. “They start in November and they don’t finish up till March.”
One member of the team spoke about his experience with the game.
“I’ve been doing this since 1991, and I do it just to have fun, get out of the house and don’t get in trouble,” David Plested with the Bowling Green Generals says.
The Bowling Green Generals beat the Ohio County Eagles to be number one in Region One.
They will compete with over 30 teams in the state tournament at the Mid-America Sports Center in Louisville on March 9 and March 10.
Basketball is, of course, one of the most popular sports that Special Olympics offers in Kentucky.
