Bowling Green Animal Protection and Humane World for Animals host animal abuse prevention training

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. –  For those that keep our community safe, training is a huge part of staying prepared for the unexpected.

Today at the Whitson Training Center, the Humane World for Animals worked with the Bowling Green Animal Protection to offer training and education for identifying animal abuse. Agencies from all over Kentucky and surrounding states gathered Tuesday to learn the best practices to protect some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

Leaders with the Humane World for Animals says that this training is invaluable as most of the time officers usually do not receive this type of training when they are getting ready to serve their communities.

“The goal of this is to allow officers to get training on animal abuse because they aren’t going to get it anywhere else. They’re often not getting it in the academy, often times its coming in the field, so we want to make sure they’re getting some of this training before they get into the field,” said Todd Blevins, the Kentucky state director for the Humane World for Animals.

Much has changed over time as well. Abusers have taken to sharing information online, and tracking these offenders can be difficult. Getting ahead of the technology before offenders can use it is the first step in protecting our beloved animals.

“Things that used to be done, maybe on pad and paper and, different notes and that sort of things, records for dogfighting or animal fighting now are migrating online. And so we, as our staff and with Humane World for animals, always have to be kind of on the forefront of that technology, making sure that we’re paying attention to what’s going on, on the internet and social media and trying to stay ahead of any animal cruelty that would unfortunately be going on here,” said Division Manager of Animal Protection in Bowling Green Brad Schargorodski.

For the general public, Blevins says that if you see something you should always say something, and immediately report suspicious behavior to your local authorities.
