Bills of high interest in the General Assembly
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The General Assembly has until March 30, or 6 working days to figure out what laws will stick and what won’t this time around.
House Bill 470 is up for debate, and currently headed to the Senate with a vote of 75 yays and 22 nays from the House of Representatives. It’s a bill essentially banning gender transition services for those under 18 in Kentucky.
It’s a bill that Governor Andy Beshear isn’t a fan of, mentioning that he is a parent himself and feels important medical decisions like that should belong in the hands of the family. However on the flip side, Representative Jennifer Decker said to the House that there is long term research that this kind of option can be harmful for Kentucky youth.
Something that many have been buzzing about is House Bill 551, which would allow sports betting in the commonwealth. Beshear said to News 40 that he is in favor of sports betting, saying that we should keep Kentucky dollars in state and that the “many many Kentuckians want it, and that should be enough reason”. It would allow Kentuckians to vote on a majority of sporting events like college basketball.
The General Assembly is on a tight deadline and will be meeting Monday to purse through several other bills, hoping to make some progress before their time is out and News 40 will keep a close eye.
