BGMU and SKYCTC unveil new sculpture

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Bowling Green Municipal Utilities, with help from the Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College, is bridging art to downtown Bowling Green.

They unveiled their latest public sculpture today at the corner of Main and Center streets. The giant water drop mirrors the logo of BGMU’s water and sewer division. It joins the lightning bolt that stands at the other end of that city block where the utility’s headquarters are located.

That sculpture represents their electric division. The project is giving SKYCTC students the chance to display their talents across multiple disciplines to the world.

David Jones, an art professor at SKYCTC, says, “My students helped with some of the ideas, some of the concepts. We drew it out, measured it out to scale, and then handed that over to welding. One of my best parts was watching the welding students reluctantly become artists. I think I’m just proud of Steve Hatcher and Chris Hagen with the welding and advanced manufacturing and us all working together. We’re really proud of it.”

BGMU’s giant water drop contains 1,050 metal rings, and it took the SKYCTC students, faculty and staff over 650 hours of work to complete. A third sculpture will be unveiled in the future. This one will represent BGMU’s fiber division. There are plans to make that one light up.
