Beshear announces over $700K for wildfire prevention in the Commonwealth
SOUTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY – As rain falls across south-central Kentucky, many areas of the Commonwealth are grappling with severe drought conditions.
During Gov. Andy Beshear’s recent Team Kentucky update, he announced that more than $700,000 will be allocated for community wildfire grants aimed at mitigating wildfire risks.
“While we’re seeing stormy weather this week, we’re actually experiencing a significant drought across Kentucky,” Beshear noted, highlighting the paradox of the situation.
The drought has had serious implications, particularly affecting agricultural water needs and heightening the risk of wildfires in vulnerable areas.
Laurel County, in particular, faces extreme drought conditions, making it susceptible to potential wildfires. Beshear emphasized the importance of addressing these challenges to protect both the environment and local communities.
The governor’s plans to reduce wildfire risks include the following, according to a release:
- Laurel County Fiscal Court: $248,900 to develop a county-wide Community Wildfire Protection Plan to improve wildfire preparedness and decrease overall risk, focusing on fire districts for education and preparedness.
- City of Harlan: $250,000 to update its Community Wildfire Protection Plan and to complete risk assessments at the home/parcel level.
- Kentucky River Area Development District: $249,540 to assist the counties of Breathitt, Knott, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Owsley, Perry and Wolfe in developing a county-specific prioritized risk areas and wildfire risk reduction objectives.
The state’s response underscores a commitment to safeguarding Kentucky’s natural resources and supporting affected communities during this critical time.
