Barren County teacher nominated for Kentucky Teacher of the Year
GLASGOW, Ky. – A local teacher has been nominated as a finalist for Kentucky’s Teacher of the Year.
Scott Johnson of Red Cross Elementary in Barren County is one of three finalists in the elementary division.
Johnson loves incorporating real world problems into his learning, doing things like 3D printing to help those not just in the school but the community at large.
We caught up with Johnson before teaching his kindergarten class about how your heart is the same size as your fist, how many bones the human body has and what germs are. He says being nominated for this honor is amazing:
“I had outstanding teachers that I grew up with in Cumberland County, I had outstanding educators that I worked with in Metcalfe County and Barren County. It’s fortunate that there’s some of the best teaching talent in the state right here in South Central Kentucky… and to know that at the end of the day, you could be among those people… it’s just a dream come true,” Johnson says.
He will be making a trip to Frankfort on Sept. 10 along with finalists in the middle & high school division, where the winners will be announced alongside the overall Teacher of the Year.
A huge congratulations to Johnson from all of us here at News 40.
