Barren County School District superintendent announces retirement

BARREN COUNTY, Ky. – Barren County School District superintendent Bo Matthews announced his retirement Thursday evening.
Matthews has served the district for more than 33 years, having gained experience as both an educator and administrator during that time, the district says.
Matthews expressed his deep gratitude to the board and community for the support he has seen during his 13 years as superintendent.
In an email to all Barren County staff, Matthews shared the following message:
“After much thought and prayer, I have decided to retire at the end of this school year. It has been an honor to serve as your superintendent for the past 13 years. I cherish every role I have been blessed to play in this district. I will take away the fond memories of students in my classroom, players on my teams, kids on a bus I was driving, and staff members I have worked beside.
” As Hiseville Elementary Principal, I treasured the opportunity to lead a school that I attended as a student for eight years. Serving as the DPP allowed me to connect with students, families, and staff across our wonderful county, and finally, as superintendent, leading an incredible team that has kept the focus on building a district where each child experiences success has been a profound
professional joy!
“I have done nothing on my own. When accolades come my way, I sing the praises and shine a light on those around me. A friend and mentor once said, “I have been lifted up on the shoulders of those who came before me.” Together, we have raised our bar! As I have said many times, we have programs and facilities that are second to none, but more than anything else, our greatest strength is our people. This team loves one another and loves those that we serve. While I may not be on the official staff roster much longer, I will always be a faithful member of the BC team. I truly love the students and staff of Barren County Schools! I’m grateful to God for having had the opportunity to lead our district. My day has always started and ended with asking Him to guide my words and actions.
“Over the next few months, the board will engage in the search for the next superintendent. Every board member has a heart for Barren County Schools, and I know their decisions will be guided by a desire to best serve our students and staff. They will be deliberate, diligent, and prayerful in finding the best person to lead the district.
“The community support of our work in the Barren County School District has been incredible! I want to thank all of our stakeholders near and far! Our district has made an impact. Thank you to my precious wife, our sons, my daughter-in-law, my granddaughter, my family, my teachers, coaches, mentors, and my friends who have supported me throughout my career. It is with sincerity that I close by saying may God bless and keep everyone safe in the Barren County School System. I’m cheering you on. The best days are still ahead! I love you all…
In Service,
Bo”
His retirement will be effective on June 30.
