WASHINGTON – Three students from Barren County High School are being recognized after winning the KY-02 Congressional App Challenge.

On Thursday, Rep. Brett Guthrie announced BCHS students Carlie Sanders, Sara Thorpe and Leah Somerville won first place. The students presented their app, “ACHE,” to Guthrie and others at the Congressional App Challenge’s House of Code Science Fair held at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Guthrie released the following statement after meeting with Sanders, Thorpe and Somerville and their parents and teachers on Thursday:

“Congratulations to our Second District App challenge winners on their incredible app ACHE. These tremendous Barren County students, Carlie Sanders, Sara Thorpe and Leah Somerville, did a fantastic job proudly representing our district at the Congressional App Challenge’s House of Code fair at the United States Capitol, where they presented their app not only to me but to the scientific community from across the nation. This is the most prestigious demo day for STEM students across the nation and I am so proud to have our Barren County students here today. I look forward to seeing their next steps representing women in STEM not just in Kentucky but for young leaders across our nation as they present their app once again at the national computer science fair.”

Congratulations to all three students!
