Barren County High School brings back youth baseball camp

GLASGOW, Ky. – Summer camps are winding down across south-central Kentucky, but the Barren County Trojans made sure to end theirs on a high note.

More than 100 campers — the most in program history — filled the field at Barren County High School on Monday morning for the Trojans’ annual youth baseball camp.

Boys from kindergarten through fifth grade spent the day learning the fundamentals of the game, from hitting and fielding to pitching and baserunning.

The camp is led by head baseball coach, J.R. Estes, who returned to the program last season. This marks the seventh camp he’s hosted at Barren County but the first since 2018.

One big change this year? A deeper level of involvement from his own players.

“It means a lot, just because a lot of these guys that are helping lead this program now, are the kids that were at these camps back in ’14, ’15, ’16 and ’17 when I was here before,” Estes said. “The kids look up to these guys — whether they think so or not. I’ve got a great group of young men, so it’s worked out for sure.”

The camp isn’t just about baseball — it’s also about building connections between young athletes and the high school players they aspire to become.

With a growing number of participants and strong community support, Estes says he hopes this becomes a lasting summer tradition for years to come.
