A nationwide test of the emergency alert system is happening Wednesday at 1:20 p.m. local time.

This means your cellphones, as well as TVs and radios, will let out a loud siren.

The National Network to End Domestic Violence says this could pose a threat to domestic violence victims.

While these alerts are meant to improve public safety, they can be dangerous for those who may have hidden cell phones from their abusers.

Tomorrow, everyone’s cell phones will go off during the emergency testing. If your phone is powered off before the 30-minute window of the test until after it ends, FEMA says you should not receive a test message.

This alert comes as Domestic Violence Awareness Month Begins. If you or someone you know may need help leaving a domestic violence situation, reach out to the National hotline anytime at 1-800-799-SAFE.
