SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. – What started as an idea three years ago now graces the wall of Allen County-Scottsville High School.

Students who walked through the school’s cafeteria lines last week might have noticed a hand-made mural of a Christmas scene.

According to Donnie Meador, public relations and community education director at the Allen County Board of Education, a few years ago, high school food service worker Sandy Fitzpatrick thought of the idea to “brighten students’ days” near Christmas by getting some senior students together to bring the idea to life.

Now, a winter wonderland is available for all to see.

“I just wanted to start a tradition,” Fitzpatrick said. “The kids enjoyed it. Its a good way for the kids to display their talent.”

Meador says students Emma Gammons and Ashtyn Ballinger worked make the project a reality.

“I was honored to be asked,” Gammons said. “We started last week and finished Wednesday [Dec. 18]. We had to manage our schedules.”

Ballinger said the experience was fun, saying, “I like to sketch, and she is better at painting. She had to do a lot of it since I was sick last week.”

According to Meador, Fitzpatrick hopes that seniors will continue this tradition each year.
