Abby’s International Market bringing diversity and culture to Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, KY.- You could be eating around the world, and you don’t have to leave the city limits. Today a discovery was made in the sanctuary city of Bowling green Kentucky. Having a wide variety of cultural foods and markets is becoming more of a necessity for many immigrants.

One tucked-away treasure lies right on Old Morgantown Road. In 2017 when the owner of Abby’s International African Market, Fiston Kamalebo discovered the value of having traditional foods from the African Culture while he was working with immigrants in Bowling Green.

Kamalebo says “The more people immigrants are coming to Bowling Green, the easier it is for everyone here needs to have their own food because there are people. They cannot eat American food. They cannot eat Mexican food. They need to have a lot of traditional food, especially for those people that cannot eat this American food that is going to get the African traditional food.”

People appreciated the market so much that the owners sister, Furasha Kamalebo began cooking and teaching others about their traditional foods now matter what your back ground is.

She says, “Eating in Lisa’s Kitchen is like making other people feel great. Ask questions. We’re going to show you how to make food. Everything that you need to know about African food, we can show you. We don’t judge. We don’t care where you are from.”

Cooking the food did more than fill people’s stomachs, it also united the community through their culture. Bringing authentic foods from different countries provides perspective and a touch of joy.
