AARP celebrates 50 years in Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons, the AARP celebrated it’s 50-year anniversary in Bowling Green with chapter #1967 inviting the public to State Street Baptist Church.
The AARP itself has been around since 1958, and members chartered a chapter in Bowling Green in 1974, beginning half a century of programming, lobbying and staying young.
The organization’s mission is to simply “empower people to choose how they live as they age,” and alongside the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, they held a small ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by lunch at the church.
Though the name might suggest one thing, AARP actually shortened its name in 1999 to open itself up to members who might still be in the workforce.
