(CNN) – If you want to get those gifts sent out on time, you may want to watch your calendar.

For delivery by Dec. 25, the United States Postal Service says the recommended deadline for ground service packages and First Class Mail, like greeting cards, is Saturday, Dec. 17.

Meanwhile, Priority Mail should be shipped by Monday, Dec. 19.

Kim Frum, a USPS senior public relations representative, said, “Everybody wants to get those holiday greetings and gifts in the mail. So be patient with the retail clerks, be patient with your carrier.”

If you need help with your shipping process, Frum says the postal service Youtube channel has how-to videos on topics like properly packing a box and addressing a package to a military service member.

She also says if you’re planning to wrap the outside of your shipping boxes in brown paper or anything else, don’t.

“No brown paper packages, no tied up with string. Do not do that, because you could run the risk of things getting caught in machinery,” she said.

For UPS, the last day to ship Second Day Air is Wednesday, Dec. 21. Those using Next Day Air should aim to ship by Thursday, Dec. 22.

Daren Jones of UPS says their operations are ready for whatever mother nature brings.

Jones said, “The good news is that we’ve been doing this for 115 years, so we know a little bit about what we’re doing here.”

For FedEx Express Saver shipments, the deadline is Tuesday, Dec. 20, and FedEx Same-Day shipments should be sent by Friday, Dec. 23.

With all major carriers, the closer to Dec. 25, the more expensive expedited delivery options will be.
