County to sell road department building and purchase Sugar Maple Square

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A late businessman’s legacy is continuing after the county agreed to purchase a property.

This morning in Warren County Fiscal Court, magistrates voted to begin the sales process for the Warren County Road Department’s building and purchase Sugar Maple Square.

The Warren County Road Department is moving.

What may seem like a mundane change is actually the story of a man who wanted to help his community.

In Warren County Fiscal Court, the vote was made to put the old building on 5th street up for sale and to move forward on the purchase of Sugar Maple Square.

“As a community is growing around it sometimes not the most convenient for us to have that right in the middle of downtown so with the interest of that facility, we’ve identified another facility that we can expand the road department and also potentially put other county official’s county offices and other functions of the county out there as well,” said Warren County Magistrate Doug Gorman.

“This gives the county an opportunity to go ahead and actually get a site where we can grow without making reinvestments,” said Warren County Judge Executive Mike Buchanon.

The late David Garvin built Sugar Maple Square in the 1990’s in hopes of bringing much needed business to the Delafield community and surrounding areas.

Garvin’s son, David Garvin Jr., says seeing the property go to a government entity to use for services means the property will be taken care of and the community nearby will benefit.

“Shopping centers who knows if they are going to be around or not with Amazons of the world and all these different kinds of things it’s nice to know that forever that this area that my dad beautified so many years ago was going to be kept in the community around them will be safe and it’s, we couldn’t be happier,” said Garvin.

Garvin says his father grew up the neighboring communities and cared about the people living there.

“He really was a community beautifier and to see this carried on in the matter it’s going to be is he would be really proud for himself,” said Garvin.

The road department is expected to be moved into Sugar Maple Square over the next several months.
