Disc golf tournament draws people from around country to Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- You might notice that discs are flying through the air in parks around Bowling Green this weekend.

That’s because the disc golf tournament, the Bowling Green Open, is going on until Sunday. Chris Westray, Tournament Director for the B Pool said this event has been going on for years.

“It started back in 1978 as a small little startup with nine baskets that was pre-made at Lampkin Park, just a few guys got together and started this event out. It’s slowly turned into one of the largest tournaments in the country,” said Westray.

Players from all over the country come to play in this tournament – from Florida to Ohio to Illinois. Disc golf basically has the same rules as regular golf- the lowest number of throws to get the disc into the basket wins.

Beth Noffsinger, communications director for the Convention and Visitors Bureau, said this brings in tourism and business to the city.

“It’s just great for our tourism scene especially since we’re in a recovery mode right now and it’s also a great event. It’s outdoors, so it’s plenty of room for people to spread out and enjoy our parks system here. Our city and counties do such a good job of maintaining the disc golf courses here,” said Noffsinger.

The people who travel into town range in expertise from beginners and amateurs to pros. Westray says Bowling Green has a great reputation for the sport.

“Bowling Green is very well known in the United States and out of this country as well for our disc golf. Within an hour drive, you can literally reach about 70 different courses. From 30 minutes of downtown Bowling Green you can reach out to 14 different courses here in town,” said Westray.

The tournament will be going on until Sunday. Then they’ll crown a winner in each division.
