Democrats claim ‘big tent’ for first convention in pandemic

NEW YORK (AP) — The family of George Floyd, the Minnesota man whose death in police custody sparked a national awakening on racial injustice, led a moment of silence Monday night in the early moments of the 2020 Democratic National Convention. In addition to racial equity, Joe Biden and the Democrats were highlighting the party’s inclusive “big tent” as their socially distanced convention got underway. Ohio’s former Gov. John Kasich, a Republican presidential contender four years ago, was joining Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, in calling for voters across the political spectrum to unite against President Donald Trump. Most of the speeches were prerecorded.
