Apple to host Annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference this week

(NBC News) Apple is hosting its annual Worldwide Developer Conference this week, but as you can imagine, this year’s conference looks very different than before.

Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed an empty stadium Monday to kick off the company’s conference. This year’s event is being held virtually for the first time due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Apple announced its newest developments including the IOS 14, which features a new home-screen redesign and the ability to use multiple apps at once. The company also unveiled masked emojis and hand-washing detection for the Apple Watch. It also said it will start making its own processors for Mac computers, marking a significant shift in the company’s strategy.

In addition, Cook acknowledged the impact of COVID-19, as well as taking time to address racial injustice.

“We must all aim far higher to build a future that lives up to our ideals,” he said.

Apple plans to launch a camp for black developers and entrepreneurs, and is pledging $100 million to fight racism, including within its own company.
