Glasgow Public Works has begun collecting leaves for citizens

GLASGOW, Ky. – Leaf collection started in Glasgow on Monday morning.

Leaves can become bothersome in smaller yards with large trees.

Sometimes, your whole yard is covered in orange, yellow and red leaves that are piling up.

Many people rake and bag and dispose of leaves every year, but the City of Glasgow has a service to help save people time and energy and reuse those leaves.

For citizens interested in participating, first, you will need to find out your areas allotted time slot for pick up.

Then, you will need to have your leaves raked into a pile by the curb or roadside.

The leaf pick up crew will drive by and collect only the leaves raked into that pile.

Westley Billingsley, the street and sanitation department manager for Glasgow Public Works, asks the public to please refrain from putting trash or tree limbs in the pile, only leaves.

“Our crews will come through. We’ve got one pull behind trailer that has its own collection box. We run a vacuum system, so we’ll have guys manually racing to that vacuum. And then we’ve got a few that you actually pull behind a dump truck, they’re still trailer mounted vacs, but they don’t have a self containment system, they blow them into the bed of the dump trucks,” said Billingsley.

What does the city do with all those leaves?

“We’ve got a compost pile, but we used a compost variant a few years ago to make a big pad for the pile. So they are it is turned into compost, which is then turned into mulch. And then we sell it at the landfill for a penny a pound,” said Billingsley.

This is a completely free service from the city.
