Farmers working to finish their last harvests and clear fields as fall continues
GLASGOW, Ky. – Now that fall is in full swing, farmers are beginning to finish up their harvests and prepare their fields for the winter.
While some farmers are using a combine to cut the corn stalks, others are harvesting pumpkins and soy beans.
But one thing most farmers have in common, they are thankful for the cooler temperatures while they work.
A 210-acre farm in Glasgow that focuses mostly on corn, soy beans, strawberries, pumpkins and beef cattle, Harris Farm, says they began harvesting Monday to clear their fields.
“Sometimes we’ll take a wagon to the field and we’ll load it up with pumpkins. You want to make sure that your skin is green and not brown and that it’s fully orange? I grew up here on this farm, so it’s very special to me,” said Gracie Harris, a local farmer.
Many farmers’ next step will be to plant cover crops, such as wheat or barley, in mid-November to help the soil and prevent erosion of their fields.
They also are preparing and storing bales of hay to feed cattle over the cooler months when the grass in the fields is no longer growing.
