Logan County Humane Society reaches 200% capacity, offers ‘Pay What You Can’ adoptions
RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. — The Humane Society for Logan County is asking the community to help find homes for dozens of cats and kittens as the shelter reaches 200% capacity.
The shelter will hold a “Pay What You Can” adoption week from Sept. 27 through Oct. 3. During the event, approved adopters can contribute whatever they can afford toward the adoption fee.
Julie Martin, president of the Humane Society for Logan County’s board of directors, said the shelter is currently caring for 54 kittens under 6 months old and 17 cats over 6 months old.
“It looks like chaos,” Martin said. “We have cats and kittens everywhere.”
Martin said every available kennel is being used, along with additional crates. Some spaces are holding entire litters of kittens.
The shelter continues to receive requests to take in more cats. Martin said staff received requests involving 13 additional cats and kittens over the course of just a few hours earlier this week.
The humane society says the overcrowding is part of a year-round cat population problem in Logan County. Martin said kittens are being born throughout the year, rather than during a limited spring “kitten season.”
The adoption promotion is also tied to upcoming improvements at the shelter.
The humane society received a $10,700 grant from the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels to purchase new kennels. Martin said some of the existing kennels are deteriorating and no longer safe for the animals.
Thomason’s Decorating Center in Russellville also donated new linoleum for the shelter’s main adoption room.
The shelter plans to reduce its cat population before the flooring work begins. Volunteers are expected to help remove the existing flooring, install the new linoleum and move equipment and kennels.
During the “Pay What You Can” adoption week, the shelter will continue to follow its regular adoption requirements.
Martin said approved adopters can contribute as little as $1 if the normal adoption fee is a financial barrier. The shelter will also accept needed supplies as a contribution, including kitten food, wet food, trash bags, gloves and kennel pads.
The shelter is hoping to find homes for as many adoptable cats and kittens as possible before temporarily closing for renovations the following week.
“We’ve got all sizes, all ages, all colors, all temperaments,” Martin said. “Come on down. And we’d be happy to match you with your perfect kitty cat.”
