BG Freedom Walkers hosting 7th annual Back-to-School Block Party
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As the new school year approaches, BG Freedom Walkers is inviting families from across south-central Kentucky to its seventh annual Back-to-School Block Party.
The free event will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. inside the gym at Dishman McGinnis Elementary School, located at 375 Glen Lily Road in Bowling Green.
Founder and CEO Karika Nelson said the annual event is designed to help students head back to school with the supplies they need while bringing the community together.
More than 600 backpacks will be available for students, along with a limited supply of school supplies. Families can also enjoy free hot dogs, games, raffles, face painting, live music and performances from local artists. The first 100 children to arrive will receive free ice cream.
This year’s event marks the first time the block party will be held indoors. After six years at Parker-Bennett basketball courts, organizers partnered with Bowling Green Independent Schools and Dishman McGinnis Elementary School to move the event inside, giving families a chance to escape the summer heat.
Nelson said the new location also allows BG Freedom Walkers to reach more neighborhoods while continuing its mission of bringing the community together through peace, love, diversity and unity.
The event is open to children ages 18 and under from Bowling Green, Warren County and surrounding counties. Organizers encourage families to arrive early while supplies last.
BG Freedom Walkers says the event is made possible through the support of numerous community sponsors and volunteers who help provide backpacks, food and activities for local students each year.
