Ohio County man accused of almost striking officers with vehicle at checkpoint

OHIO COUNTY, Ky. – A Hartford man is accused of almost striking police officers with his vehicle and fleeing police.

According to the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint near the intersection of Longview Church Lane and U.S. Highway 62 East Wednesday evening. Deputies say a car drove up to the checkpoint and disregarded the stop signals. The car continued through the checkpoint and almost struck two deputies before fleeing the scene toward Beaver Dam.

OSCO says the Beaver Dam Police Department secured the intersection of U.S. Highway 231 and U.S. Highway 62 East to stop the car. The driver continued to flee, driving 91 mph in a 35 mph zone.

The car then traveled south onto U.S. Highway 231 and then pulled into the Walmart parking lot. The driver then fled on foot.

OSCO says officers pursued the suspect through a nearby bean field, where the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect in the investigation is 28-year-old Stephon Wilson, of Hartford. Wilson was arrested and lodged at the Ohio County Detention Center.

Wilson is charged with:

  • Disregarding Signals of an Officer Directing Traffic / Fleeing
  • Wanton Endangerment, First Degree (Police Officer)
  • Fleeing or Evading Police, First Degree (Motor Vehicle)
  • Speeding 26 MPH or Greater Over the Speed Limit
  • Reckless Driving
  • Fleeing or Evading Police, Second Degree (On Foot)
  • Driving on a DUI-Suspended License, First Offense (Aggravating Circumstances)

The investigation is ongoing.
