SoKY’s Choice: Bowling Green-Warren County celebrates Independence Day while honoring America’s 250th anniversary

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) – Patriotic pride filled Circus Square Park on Independence Day as Bowling Green and Warren County celebrated the nation’s founding while kicking off America’s yearlong 250th anniversary celebration.

The free community event featured food, carnival games, live music, contests, a children’s sidewalk parade and a patriotic program highlighting the history behind the nation’s independence.

During the ceremony, Rand Paul reflected on the Revolutionary War and the local connection to Dr. Joseph Warren, the patriot for whom Warren County is named.

Paul noted that while many Americans know the story of Paul Revere’s famous midnight ride, fewer know that Joseph Warren directed Revere to warn colonial militias that British troops were advancing toward Lexington and Concord. He said Warren’s sacrifice during the Battle of Bunker Hill cemented his place as one of the nation’s earliest heroes and remains an important part of Warren County’s identity.

Todd Alcott also spoke about the significance of the milestone, saying America’s history continues to evolve while reminding attendees that the community’s roots stretch back to the nation’s earliest days.

Organizers said the celebration was designed to bring families together while encouraging residents to learn more about the people and events that shaped both the country and the local community.

The event marked the beginning of a nationwide celebration leading up to the United States’ 250th anniversary, which will be observed in 2026.
