Simpson County residents provide input on future goals during strategic plan update meeting

FRANKLIN, Ky. – Simpson County residents had the opportunity Thursday night to share their thoughts on the county’s future during the first public meeting to update its strategic plan.

The Simpson County Steering Committee, in partnership with the Barren River Area Development District, hosted the meeting at the Franklin Police Department to gather feedback on the county’s goals and objectives.

Every five years, counties are required to develop a comprehensive economic development plan. The plan outlines priorities focused on economic growth and quality-of-life improvements.

Russ Hurd, BRADD’s community and economic development director, said the meeting was designed to give residents a direct role in shaping those priorities.

“The purpose of the meeting is to give community members an opportunity to have their voice heard,” Hurd said. “They have an opportunity to look at each objective on the pillars and they can say, yes, I like this or no, maybe this should be removed or reworded.”

The strategic plan is developed with input from local leaders, stakeholders, utility departments, public safety agencies and organizations like the chamber of commerce.

Hurd said the goal is to make sure city and county leaders are working together toward a shared vision.

“The goal is for everyone to work together and be on the same page with the vision going forward,” Hurd said.

Residents attending the meeting were able to review current objectives, suggest changes and recommend new areas for consideration.

Hurd said public involvement is a critical part of the process because the plan is intended to reflect the needs and priorities of those who live in Simpson County.

“The whole purpose of this is to improve the economic and just the quality of life for the residents,” Hurd said.

Residents who were unable to attend the meeting can still provide feedback through BRADD’s website or by contacting the organization directly. The updated strategic plan will continue to be developed with community input before being finalized.
