‘No suspected or confirmed reports of hantavirus in Kentucky,’ health officials say

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – On Friday, the Barren River District Health Department confirmed there are no suspected or confirmed cases of hantavirus in Kentucky.
According to a social media release, the health department worked in coordination with the Kentucky Department for Public Health.
In addition, the health department states no Kentuckians have been known to have been exposed to hantavirus, the Andes strain of hantavirus, or to have traveled on the MV Hondius cruise ship.
Local health departments, health care facilities and the public will also be notified if a confirmed case were identified, according to the Barren River District Health Department.
Anyone can reduce their risk of exposure to Hantavirus by implementing proper cleaning practices when entering a space rodents may be living — such as barns, cabins and other spaces, officials say.
1. Wear appropriate protective equipment, such as a respirator mask and gloves.
2. Allow the space to air out for 30 minutes, opening any windows or doors.
3. Avoid dry sweeping or vacuuming any rodent fecal matter.
4. Spray or dampen the area with disinfectant, allowing the affected area to become wet.
5. Use a mop, sponge, or paper towel to clean the area.
6. Wash your hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds following cleaning.
