Demolition begins at Hilltopper Hall on WKU campus

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Demolition began Tuesday morning at Hilltopper Hall on Western Kentucky University’s campus, according to Dr. Jace Lux, director of media relations/WKU spokesperson.
This follows after 388 students relocated from Hilltopper Hall in 2024 after some of the masonry work on the outside of the building had shifted out of position, prompting an investigation into an assessment of the building, according to WKU’s website.
In News 40’s original report, the relocation was announced in January 2024, with students being required to relocate by February 4, 2024.
Roughly one year ago, the Student Life Foundation announced that Regents Hall and Normal Hall, two of its newest residence halls on campus at the time, would be temporarily closed for at least the upcoming academic year following the results of an independent engineering assessment conducted by a nationally recognized firm.
“We engaged an independent, nationally respected engineering firm to thoroughly evaluate the situation,” said Brad Howard, chair of the Student Life Foundation, which owns the residence halls located on WKU’s campus.
He further stated, “Regents and Normal do not appear to share the same significant structural issues identified in Hilltopper Hall. However, some components do not meet Kentucky’s commercial occupancy standards and must be addressed before students can return.”
On Tuesday, May 12, Lux stated both Regents and Normal halls are expected to reopen for the fall semester.
News 40 will provide any additional updates or details as they are released.
