Glasgow Senior Center hosts Proclamation for Older Americans Month

GLASGOW, Ky.- Several community members and leaders gathered at the Glasgow Senior Center for its annual open house to promote access to health care resources that are vital for older citizens during Older Americans Month.

Drew Settle, the senior center manager, says, “Older Americans are a big part of our community, and it’s important to give back to those people and give as many resources for them to be able to, to live a great life. And we want to make sure that we are always involved in recognizing them.

Ensuring that seniors aren’t overlooked can improve their quality of life, especially if they’ve lost loved ones along the way.

Jane Pruitt, an Americorps senior, says, “I am a widow. And I always continued working because of that; it keeps me moving. It keeps me stimulated my mind. I don’t want to be dull. I don’t want my grandkids or my daughter to wait on me as I get older. And I just want to be among people who are my age. Plus, I also like to be young, I’m a young person too.”

Not only is the senior center creating a space for people to have access to resources but it’s also creating an opportunity for seniors to enjoy life.

Settle says, “We have lots of activities, and we make sure they are okay. Need a good lunch at the end of the day? At the end of the day, we’re here about five hours. So it’s just a lot of fun. And we encourage singers to come, or our children who have singers with maybe a little problem with memory, to bring them here and where they can be, have activities that will stimulate their mind, and get them to keep on moving.”

The life-changing benefits that the offers go beyond the people who utilize the resources. It also gives community members the chance to give to those who are more vulnerable than others.

Settle says, “We do a lot of activities with them, but it is run on donations. So it’s very difficult for the congregants to be able to just give money consistently for us to be able to do that stuff. Think it’s a great place. I’ve tried to grow it as much as we can here, and it has grown. So I’m very proud of this place.”
