Economic impact of Valentine’s Day on the floral industry

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Valentine’s Day is a busy holiday for florists all across the country, and that is no different here in Bowling Green.

Deemer’s Floral Co. has been serving the Bowling Green community for 100 years, keeping the business in the family. This week has been no different that other Valentines Day weeks, with a rush of customers flooding through the door.

These customers play a pivotal role in keeping the family practice alive with holidays like Mother’s Day, Christmas and Valentine’s Day, seeing a major increase in services provided.

“It’s a big deal for all for us. I mean, it’s, you know, days that you get so much more business than on a normal day. And so you have to take advantage of it and get as much done as you can. So yeah, it’s a big deal as far as being a money maker for the flower business,” said Ellen Buchanon, owner of Deemers Floral Co.

According to the Society of American Florists, Valentine’s Day makes up for 30% of all floral sales year round across the country. Here in Bowling Green, Deemer’s has already fulfilled hundreds of orders, with still one more day to go for the Valentine’s Day season.
