Cardiologist discusses awareness during American Heart Month

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – February is American Heart Month.

According to health experts, there’s a significant gap in how many people know heart health risks that don’t have obvious symptoms.

Your heart is the strongest muscle in your body, and it pumps more than 100,000 times a day.

A lot of the diseases that many people know about can be prevented by managing your weight, getting enough sleep and going to see your doctor regularly, experts say.

Without introducing these tips into your lifestyle, your heart health can be negatively impacted.

Dr. Vincent Sorrell, cardiologist/chief of cardiovascular medicine with UK Health, says, “We all know about things like heart attacks, blocked arteries and hardening of the arteries, which leads to narrowing of the blood flow system, the pumping system. And then you don’t get the nutrients that the muscle needs, and part of the muscle dies. That’s what a heart attack is.”

Sorrell says being CPR certified can save life and that the American Heart Association is a resource that has many tips to improve heart health.
