News 40 travels with Warren County sheriff to survey road conditions

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – The big story this week is the winter weather happening across the U.S., whether it’s snow, ice or freezing temperatures; all of this can lead to dangerous conditions, especially on the roads.

Warren County sheriff Brett Hightower says, “It’s definitely treacherous. Yeah. And if it’s snow embankments, people sliding off the road, and you get stuck out there, and then these types of temperatures can be extremely dangerous.“

With the bright sunshine during the day, many people think it’s okay to be out and about despite freezing temperatures.

“There’s this thin layer of ice on a lot of our roadways right now. And just because it’s getting so cold and we hit the freezing rain the other day, which made multiple layers of ice on his team, to end up freezing over. So some of your well-traveled areas have got a little bit more thawing on them tonight. Those are going to refreeze.”

If you must get out on the roads, you are encouraged by law enforcement officers to be prepared by letting people know where you are going before you leave, having a blanket in your car and keeping your gas tank full, because roadway conditions are still very slick.

Hightower also says, “It can really be dangerous out here. So I would really highly recommend that people just stay home.”
