SoKY’s Choice: BG Freedom Walkers host 6th Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) – The BG Freedom Walkers brought neighbors, families and volunteers together Sunday evening for their sixth annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner, a celebration focused on food, fellowship and unity.

Held at the Plum Springs Community Center, the free dinner featured home-cooked dishes, raffles, live performances and activities for families. Organizers say the goal is not just to feed people, but to give the community a place to come together during the holiday season.

Karika Nelson, founder and CEO of the BG Freedom Walkers, said the dinner has grown every year since the nonprofit began hosting it.

“We like to give back to our community,” Nelson said. “People can come out and share peace, love, diversity and unity with us, as well as get a free meal and just have a great time together.”

The Freedom Walkers rotate the location each year to reach different neighborhoods across Bowling Green. Nelson said the team expects hundreds to attend, and the rising turnout reflects how much the event has become a staple for families.

For some, the gathering is especially meaningful. Board member Santonio Chiles, who oversees entertainment for the group, said the dinner provides comfort and connection for people who may not have family nearby.

“A lot of people don’t have family here for Thanksgiving,” Chiles said. “They always know that we are family. It don’t matter color or race, we want everybody to feel that Thanksgiving vibe and come together and be thankful.”

Organizers say they plan to keep growing the event as long as the community needs it. The Freedom Walkers’ next gathering, the annual Merry Meal Christmas Dinner, is scheduled for Dec. 14, also at the Plum Springs Community Center.
