Salvation Army in need of donations as cold season drifts in
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With the cold season drifting in, some local organizations are now opening up their doors to provide a shelter, a warm meal and a place to sleep for those who may have nowhere to go.
The Salvation Army is one of those places, and they have now recognized a need for donations, as they have seen an increase in a need for food. And while the Salvation Army will not turn anybody away, they do need help from the community to help sustain this busy time of year.
“We have already had increased in requests for food boxes and, those coming to our soup kitchen. So the increase of need is greater. And also, our supplies are low right now, so we’re just asking for donations so that we can help the families that are coming to us in need,” said Capt. Monica Horton.
The Salvation Army provides food year round for those who need it, but the colder seasons are especially busy. In total, The Salvation Army will feed tens of thousands of people in just one year.
“Well it’s definitely our busiest seasons. I’m not exactly sure on the number of meals that we serve, but we’ve served, over 60,000 meals last year out of our, out of our soup kitchens. So I’m not sure how that breakdown is, by month, but I do know that in our winter months, it is a greatest,” Horton said.
But there are other ways that you can help as well. This week also marks the Kettle Kickoff, where you can start to see volunteers set up outside of stores ringing bells for donations.
The donations, no matter how small, can add up over time and helps the Salvation Army continue their mission.
The most important thing for people to realize that that’s our largest fundraiser of the year. It helps to sustain us throughout the year. And so it’s really important, no matter how big or small the donations, those people just grab some change out of their pocket and put it in the the kettle. That adds up to what you see as people and meals and nights of shelter,” Horton said.
If you would like to donate, you can drop food off at their building located at 400 W.Main Ave. in Bowling Green.
